A. Ledo completed her BS in Biochemistry in 2000 (U. Coimbra) and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 2007 (U. Coimbra) and is currently Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Coimbra. Her research has focused on decoding the bioactivity of oxidants such as nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in the brain, namely as modulators of neurometabolic and neurovascular coupling. Important contributions to the field of redox biology include the determination of NO concentration dynamics linked to activation of the NMDA receptor; the demonstration in brain tissue that NO resulting from neuronal activity modulates tissue oxygen consumption; the linking of changes in NO bioavailability to derailment of neurovascular and neurometabolic processes in aging and neurodegeneration; and the demonstration that, akin to NO, H2O2 can also act as an intercellular volume signaling molecule in brain tissue in vivo. These achievements are underpinned by the design of cutting-edge analytical tools for monitoring neurochemicals in vivo in brain tissue, namely micro(bio)sensors for NO, H2O2, oxygen, glucose, lactate, and glutamate, and novel bioanalytical techniques for the study of brain bioenergetic metabolism coupled to neuronal activity in vivo. To date, A. Ledo is the author of 40 research papers published in peer-reviewed journals, counting 823 citations and an h-factor of 18. She has had two grants approved as PI, focused on the role of NO signaling in the pathophysiology of neurodegeneration, and was co-PI of the project "Monitoring neurometabolic markers in vivo using microelectrode-based biosensors." She has supervised two Ph.D. theses and two MSc theses, and she is currently the co-supervisor of one Ph.D. student and one MSc student.
