Visão Geral

I graduated in Biochemistry from the University of Porto in 2002 and completed a PhD in Biomedical Sciences in 2009, at the same University. In the third year of my degree, I started my scientific career as a volunteer in the laboratory of Professor Pedro Moradas Ferreira (IBMC - Porto, Portugal), studying the production of methane by methanotrophic bacteria. I continued this study at the Biological Research Center (BRC - Szeged, Hungary), under the supervision of Professor Kornel Kovacs, with an Erasmus scholarship. Finishing my degree I moved to Hematology, where I studied the migration patterns of neoplastic T cells under the supervision of Professor Margarida Lima at Centro Hospitalar e Universitário do Porto - Hospital de Santo António (CHUP/HSA - Porto, Portugal). During my PhD, I learned and performed routine hospital laboratory practices in various areas, from flow cytometry to molecular biology. From 2009 to 2016, I dedicated myself exclusively to an academic career at IPVC (Viana do Castelo, Portugal), having taught several disciplines (Biochemistry, Biophysics, Cellular and Molecular Biology, among others), mentoring several undergraduate and master's students and organized or participated in the organization of various national and international conferences. In 2016 I resumed my full-time research career at CNC.IBILI (Coimbra, Portugal), under the supervision of Professor Eugénia Carvalho, in the area of diabetic foot and, as a result, since 2015 I am the author of 15 publications in indexed international journals with high impact factor. In 2017 I took the FELASA animal experimentation course with the surgery and anesthesia modules. At the same time, I raised €27,000 in small projects (as PI) and prizes that were used in the pursuit of new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for diabetic complications. I have a broad and multidisciplinary training and professional experience, developed over a laboratory and academic career.
