O grupo de investigação em Obesidade, Diabetes e Complicações, liderado pela Dra. Eugénia Carvalho tem vindo a estudar o papel do tecido adiposo (AT) como órgão endócrino e inflamatório. O AT encontra-se profundamente envolvido no desenvolvimento da resistência à insulina e complicações resultantes da diabetes. A sua equipa utiliza sistemas in vitro, modelos pré-clínicos, assim como estudos clínicos para perceber o estado de disfunção do AT ao longo da vida. O grupo encontra-se a estudar o impacto do imunometabolismo do AT e os seus efeitos a nível sistémico de pessoas com diferentes graus de resistência à insulina. A sua equipa está ainda avaliar diferenças entre vários depósitos de AT e as suas respetivas atividades mitocondriais. Além disso, Dra. Carvalho acredita que a capacidade oxidativa das células/tecidos pode servir como marcador para doenças, antes dos seus sintomas aparecerem, ou mesmo antes do seu diagnóstico. Ela tem vindo a avaliar a função mitocondrial em células circulantes em adultos e crianças com obesidade. O principal objetivo é perceber alterações iniciais no metabolismo imune e como estas se relacionam com distúrbios metabólicos ao longo da vida. Além disso, Dra. Carvalho também acredita que fatores ambientais como a falta de nutrientes específicos, fármacos e o estilo de vida influenciam fortemente a saúde metabólica mitocondrial e imune, assim como o fenótipo específico das células gordas. Assim, perceber o impacto de nutraceuticos para promover a saúde metabólica é um objetivo.

A sua equipa tem vindo também avaliar a regeneração de tecidos e a cura de feridas no contexto da resistência à insulina e diabetes, com o objetivo de melhorar o diagnóstico precoce de indivíduos em risco de complicações crónicas, a fim de melhorar o tratamento personalizado de indivíduos com úlceras do pé diabético. Por fim, encontram-se ainda avaliar o papel dos microRNAs e de péptidos antimicrobianos na infecção e cicatrização de feridas em modelos pré-clínicos e em ambiente clínico em indivíduos diabéticos.
