O cérebro evoluiu para proporcionar capacidades sensoriais, emocionais, de memória e cognitivas espantosas. De uma perspetiva evolutiva, tem-se argumentado que as alterações mais críticas impostas ao cérebro dos mamíferos estão diretamente relacionadas com o aperfeiçoamento do “cérebro social”. Os mamíferos utilizam várias regiões cerebrais para processar e responder plenamente aos ambientes sociais - desde os sentidos, à memória dos outros e aos centros emocionais. Como consequência desta complexidade, as perturbações neuropsiquiátricas e do neurodesenvolvimento partilham deficiências nos comportamentos sociais. A nossa investigação visa compreender, a nível molecular, celular e dos circuitos, como a genética, o ambiente e as interacções gene-ambiente influenciam a função dos circuitos neuronais na saúde e na doença, com um enfoque específico nas perturbações do neurodesenvolvimento e nos comportamentos sociais. Para atingir este objetivo, utilizamos uma combinação de técnicas de genética molecular, comportamento, eletrofisiologia e optogenética. Especificamente, desenvolvemos modelos de doença baseados em células humanas e de ratinhos para compreender os componentes genéticos e ambientais das doenças do desenvolvimento neurológico, com especial incidência nos mecanismos subjacentes aos comportamentos que fazem lembrar estas condições.
