O foco do nosso grupo foi, desde o seu início, a investigação do papel das mitocôndrias na génese e progressão da doença. As mitocôndrias são organelos-chave para a maioria das patologias, e o estudar da sua função e como a preservar pode levar à identificação de alvos moleculares e agentes farmacológicos. Ao desenvolver novos conceitos e ao colaborar com grupos de topo por todo o mundo, temos consistentemente produzido investigação de ponta nas áreas da toxicologia, doenças metabólicas, envelhecimento e preservação de órgãos, para indicar apenas alguns.
Somos um grupo de investigação altamente focado que se orgulha de estar sempre em busca de novas soluções e novas abordagens para problemas antigos e novos, de modo a fazer avançar o campo da saúde humana.
Usamos regularmente técnicas estabelecidas e de ponta para atingir os nossos objectivos, como métodos in vitro, análise fisiológica por eléctrodos, conteúdo proteico, expressão e manipulação genética, entrega dirigida de agentes farmacológicos, modelos animais especializados, análise metabólica por RMN ou Seahorse, entre outras.
O nosso grupo tem mais de 150 publicações em reputadas revistas e livros internacionais com arbitragem por pares, que acumularam cerca de 10 000 citações, um claro indicador da relevância e interesse do nosso trabalho.
