Visão Geral

O Grupo de Neuroendocrinologia e Envelhecimento tem como missão contribuir para o desenvolvimento de investigação na área do envelhecimento, nomeadamente demonstrar que a intervenção no sistema neuroendócrino, e funções associadas, em modelos experimentais pode atrasar, parar e, em alguns exemplos, reverter as manifestações do envelhecimento e dos  distúrbios e doenças associados ao envelhecimento.

Objetivos

  • Investigar a contribuição do eixo neuroendócrino para o envelhecimento e distúrbios relacionados com o envelhecimento;
  • Investigar novas estratégias para atrasar o envelhecimento e os distúrbios relacionados com o envelhecimento, direcionado ao hipotálamo ou aos mecanismos relacionados com as funções do hipotálamo (ritmo circadiano, sono, ingestão de alimentos, metabolismo);
  • Utilizar estratégias miméticas de restrição calórica, como neuropeptídeos, novos ativadores de sirtuins-1, e restabelecimento do ritmo circadiano para prevenir o envelhecimento e doenças ou disfunções associadas ao envelhecimento (disfunção do metabolismo, osteoartrite (OA), disfunções do sono, doenças neurodegenerativas);
  • Compreender se e como o Síndrome de Apneia Obstrutiva do Sono (SAOS)  ou a insónia induzem ou aceleram os mecanismos moleculares do envelhecimento.

O grupo tem competências no estabelecimento de modelos celulares e animais de envelhecimento e distúrbios relacionados à idade (progéria, doenças neurodegenerativas, OSA, OA, insónia, disfunção metabólica e obesidade), marcadores fisiológicos, celulares e moleculares (nomeadamente autofagia , senescência, inflamação), abordagens de transferência de genes, análise do ritmo circadiano, química medicinal,  estudos pré-clínicos e atividades de envolvimento do público com a ciência.
