Catarina Resende de Oliveira, researcher and former president of CNC-UC, was awarded the medal for scientific merit at the Ciência 2024.

The meeting took place at Alfândega do Porto on 3, 4 and 5 July 2024 and was organized by the Foundation for Science and Technology, Ciência Viva and the University of Porto. With the theme +Science for One Health and global well-being, it brought together the national scientific community for three days of debate, knowledge and interaction.
Biography:
Catarina Resende de Oliveira was born in Coimbra, graduated in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra in 1970 and obtained her doctorate in the specialty of Neurology in 1984 from the same university. A Retired Full Professor, she was president of the CNC-UC from 2003 to 2013.
Her research interests center on the study of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration that occur in dementia, namely prion dementia and Alzheimer's disease, and on the identification of disease biomarkers and new targets for therapeutic intervention.
He has published more than 300 scientific articles in high-impact journals and has received several awards and distinctions, including the Ordem da Instrução Pública - Grande Oficial, awarded by the Presidency of the Republic. He was a member of the board of the Clinical Academic Center of Coimbra. He coordinated the installation committee and was president of the Agency for Clinical Research and Biomedical Innovation from 2020 to 2024.
