Specific scientific area: Cell Biology
Announcement summary: the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC), of the University of Coimbra, is opening a competition for hiring a Superior Technician of Laboratory (qualification level 7 – Master Degree) to carry out research activities within the scope of the project SortAX – PTDC/BIA-CEL/2286/2020, with the following characteristics:
Number of positions: 1
Contracting regime: unfixed-term employment contract, on an exclusive basis, under the Labor Code approved by Law No. 7/2009 of February 12, in its current wording - Law No. 93/2019 of September 4. The contract will have the duration of predictably 12 months, with the possibility of renewal until the end of the project.
Remuneration level: Gross monthly wage of €1566,61, corresponding to the level TRU 22 (Single Remuneration Table Updated pursuant to Decree-Law No. 10-B/2020, of March 23).
Funding: Funded by national funds managed by FCT/MCTES and the European Regional Strategic Development Fund (FEDER) through COMPETE 2020 – Competitiveness and Internationalization Operational Program.
Workplace: CNC, based at the University of Coimbra, Polo I, and its research extensions at the Faculty of Medicine, Polo I.
Applicants: National, foreign or stateless candidates who hold a Master's degree in the area of Biochemistry, Biology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biotechnology, and Health Sciences, or related fields, holders of a scientific and professional curriculum that reveals an adequate profile for the activity to be developed, and should be proficient in both spoken and written English.
Type of Activity: To perform research activities within the funded project “SortAx – Uncovering the molecular machinery responsible for cargo sorting in neuronal polarization” of the Synapse Biology group from CNC. The goal of this project is to elucidate the molecular and cellular mechanisms that control the trafficking of proteins to the axon, and which are required for the establishment and maintenance of the neuronal polarity. The candidate will perform diverse techniques of molecular biology (such as molecular cloning) for preparation/amplification of new DNA constructs and CRISPR-Cas9-mediated gene manipulation, prepare primary neuronal cultures, which will be used for proteomics, biochemistry and imaging experiments (namely live-cell imaging), and make viral preparations (such as lentiviruses and adeno-associated viruses).
Selection method: Curriculum Evaluation (CE) and Interview (INT) to the four (4) candidates with the highest ranking in the CE.
Selection and final decision criteria: The CE will consider the absolute merit of the applicant's Curriculum Vitae (CV) and his/her suitability to the profile and tasks described above, such as proven experience in methodologies of molecular biology, preparation of primary neuronal cultures and imaging techniques (e.g. live-cell imaging). Previous experience with CRISPR-Cas9-mediated gene manipulation and/or proteomics will be particularly valued. In the INT the candidate's ability to communicate and verbally expresses himself/herself, as well as the candidate's analysis and critical sense and his/her motivation and interest will be valued.
The formula for obtaining the final classification (FC), on a scale from 0 to 100, will be: FC = 0.50* CE + 0.50*INT.
The Selection Jury reserves the right of not selecting any candidate if it is verified that none of them has the appropriate profile for the exercise of the functions.

Formalizing the application: Applications are mandatorily formalized in English by sending an application containing the applicant's CV with the academic record (including final grades from the different higher studies cycles) and list of publications, motivation letter, copy of Master's degree certificate, and name and contact details of 2 (two) references. If the Master's degree has been awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 341/2007, of October 12, and any formalities established therein must be completed by the deadline for application.
Application submission: Applications must be sent, obligatorily, by email to Luís Ribeiro – firstname.lastname@example.org, attaching all the requested documents and indicating the reference of this job advertisement (SortAx_MSc) in the subject field.
