CiBB SciComm Series - Spring/Summer 2026 edition

The CiBB SciComm Series is a new training initiative designed to empower researchers with practical tools to communicate science more effectively and foster meaningful engagement with society.

Organised by the Science Communication Office and open to the entire CiBB community, this first Spring/Summer edition features three intensive, hands-on workshops focused on key areas of science communication: Visual Science Communication, Science and the Media, and Public Engagement in Science.

Across these sessions, participants will develop skills to translate complex ideas into clear and engaging messages, interact with different audiences, and design impactful communication and engagement strategies for their research.

Each workshop is highly interactive and limited to 15 participants, ensuring a dynamic and personalized learning experience. Participation is free of charge, but registration is mandatory and places are allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Deadline to apply: April 30, 2026 | 5pm

Information about the workshops:

Visual Science Communication - How to design a graphical abstract: May 7 (Workshop coordinator: Rita Félix) @ Rómulo

Workshop description: “How to design a graphical abstract” workshop aims to explain what a graphical abstract is, and give you design tools and tips on how to create a better, clear and engaging graphical abstract. This workshop is tailored to give you tools and improve your graphical abstract, without having to learn how to use a new software program (like Adobe Illustrator). Below there is a mandatory field to submit your graphical abstract, that will be shared in class by each participant and is the material you will be working on and get feedback from. Bring your own computer and graphical abstract, share it with the class, work on it and take home a new version!

Science & Media: Jun 18 (Workshop coordinator: Inês Amado da Silva) @ Rómulo

Workshop description: How are media related to scientific research? Are new media, such as social media, the answer to scientists’ need to communicate with society? In this workshop, divided into two main sections — traditional media and new media — we will discuss the fundamental role of media outlets in free societies and strategies for disseminating scientific research through media (television, radio, newspapers). Thinking about social media as essential platforms for engaging with society, we will also discuss skills for communicating scientific projects and enhancing content reach strategies.

Public Engagement in Science: Jul 8 (Workshop coordinator: Sara Varela Amaral) @ Rómulo

Workshop description: This hands-on training workshop is designed for researchers who want to strengthen science communication and integrate meaningful societal engagement into their research projects. Participants will explore key approaches such as science literacy, co-creation, and citizen science, and apply them through interactive exercises and real-world examples. The workshop combines short conceptual inputs with practical activities, including pitching research to different audiences, designing a communication and engagement strategy using a logic model, and drafting a dissemination task relevant to research projects. The focus is on learning by doing, reflection, and applying concepts directly to participants’ own research contexts.
