Overview

Ana Rita Álvaro got her BSc degree in Biology in 2003 at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, University of Coimbra, Portugal. After, she received a FCT PhD Fellowship to develop her PhD research with Cláudia Cavadas as scientific supervisor at Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC), University of Coimbra. In 2008, Ana Rita Álvaro got her PhD degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Coimbra. After that, she got a FCT post-doc fellowship (2009-2010) to develop the work “Caloric restriction increases lifespan: the role of Neuropeptide Y”. From 2010-2014, she was invited assistant professor at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro. During this period, Ana Rita Álvaro was responsible for the teaching of the following subjects: Cell Biology; Animal Cell culture; Cellular Genetics; Neurochemistry. Moreover, Ana Rita Álvaro organized and coordinated several outreach activities, including the "UTAD Júnior" that integrated 250 basic and high school students in different activities at the university. Since July 2014 Ana Rita join CNC as postdoctoral researcher and implemented an innovative research line, matching fundamental and applied research through a project, whose aim is to evaluate the biological clock disruption in Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) patients and, consequently, identify possible new biomarkers that may antecipate OSA diagnosis. At the same time, she is responsible for the generation of induced pluripotent stem cells in a project that brings together 6 international partners within an European Consortium (JPND). Concerning outreach activities at CNC, since 2004, she was actively present in several science communication activities integrated in the CNC outreach programme, particularly, in the Brain Awareness Week. Ana Rita is co-author of 22 articles in peer-reviewed international journals and received 14 awards for the best presented work. Since 2006, Ana Rita coordinated and/or participated in 14 research projects, is scientific supervisor of 2 PhD thesis (ongoing), 7 MSc thesis and having supervised/collaborated in the supervision 18 undergraduate research students. Ana Rita has been also actively involved in the management of scientific projects and team building. Additionally, Ana Rita has working in a more entrepreneurial vertent which led her to participate in a business/innovation and startup programme organized by University of Coimbra (IneoStart 2015 and 2017; www.ineostart.pt). From this programme, arose the startup SleepApnea ID, a project that Ana Rita is one of the co-founder.
