Overview

1. Interdisciplinary studies on metabolism, communication and health promotion
We aim to explore how far can comics/visual narratives go in terms of health promotion, joining biomedical and life/environmental sciences, social sciences, and humanities, and using both qualitative and qualitative approaches. Interdisciplinarity and participatory research provide strong evidence that active engagement contributes to a deeper understanding of circumstances associated with disease condition.

2. Functional attributes of fungi for human health
Fungi, important components for ecosystems functioning and human diet, have increasingly gained momentum in biomedical research and therapeutics due to their interplay in metabolism traits. Imbalances in transition metals are known to directly link to human disease ranging from metabolic to neurodegenerative disorders. We intend to investigate the capacity of a zinc-enriched mushroom diet to decrease the absorption of deleterious transition metals in the gastrointestinal tract.

3. Human–nature interactions for health and sustainability
People-centred approaches highlight wider socioeconomic and natural environmental determinants reflecting health needs, health expectations and health capability. Cross-disciplinary research may also provide insights / innovation for more effective health-promoting changes in people and places. We aim to better understanding the human–nature interactions and their potential (1) as drivers of health and well-being and (2) to the shift needed toward healthy diets and ecological sustainability. The new curricular unit ‘Health, Sustainability and Planning’, created in the master course Integrated Urban Rehabilitation, at the Department of Architecture of the University of Coimbra, strengths the contribution of interdisciplinary–participatory research, namely within and for One Health approaches.
