Today is World Food Day 2026

16/10/2026

Today, October 16, is World Food Day. The CNC-UC marks this day through a partnership with TUMO Coimbra. Every year, on this day, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) raises awareness about world hunger and promotes actions for the future of food through various events and activities, organized in 150 countries.

This year’s theme–”Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow”–reinforces the combination of traditional knowledge, visionary solutions and inclusive approaches as a strategy to ensure access to safe, nutritional and sufficient foods for everyone, without foregoing sustainability for future generations.

The FAO also shares on their website and social media personal and community stories, as well as approaches and choices we can take in our lives to help shape a more sustainable future for food in the world.

In partnership with TUMO Coimbra, CNC-UC marks World Food Day with an original illustration created by TUMOnauts Bruna Esteves, Carolina Gomes and Constança Silva in the context of the workshop Make Science Visual (in partnership with CNC-UC lead by Rita Félix), during 2026’s TUMO Alt July.

TUMO is a free education project where teens from 12 to 18 years old can learn to work in various technological and artistic fields. Originally founded in Yerevan (Armenia) in 2011, the project now has centres all around the world, three of them in Portugal.

This week, the European project PAS GRAS organised a series of webinars discussing topics such as healthy eating patterns, gut microbiota and food supplements, culminating in the final webinar on ultra-processed foods, which takes place today at 6.30pm with Sara Rodrigues.
