In Memoriam: Professor José Cunha-Vaz

22/01/2026

CNC-UC mourns the passing of Professor José Cunha-Vaz, founder of the Institute for Biomedical Research in Light and Image (IBILI), now Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research (iCBR-FMUC).

Professor José Cunha-Vaz was a pioneering and indispensable figure in ophthalmology and biomedical research, recognized nationally and internationally for his exceptional scientific contributions. More than a world-renowned physician and researcher, he was a visionary who dedicated his life to advancing knowledge and improving healthcare, firmly believing in research as a driving force for progress.

For iCBR-FMUC, Professor Cunha-Vaz was far more than its founder. He was a mentor and a lasting source of inspiration, whose intellect, scientific rigor, and humanity continue to shape the identity, values, and mission of the institute. As he often emphasized, research only makes sense when it serves people and contributes to improving their quality of life.

CNC-UC pays heartfelt tribute to the memory of Professor José Cunha-Vaz and extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of working and learning alongside him.

His legacy will remain alive in the University of Coimbra, in the research carried out here, and in the future generations who continue the path he helped build.
