Margarida Caldeira got her BSc degree in Biochemistry in 2002 at the Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Coimbra, Portugal. During her degree she performed a one year undergraduate trainning at the CNS Discovery Research, Janssen Pharmaceutica N. V., a division of Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development, Beerse, Belgium. In 2002, Margarida engaged the PhD Programme in Experimental Biology & Biomedicine of the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology of Coimbra, University of Coimbra with the research project “Regulation of the Expression of Ionotropic Glutamate Receptors by BDNF in Hippocampal Neurons” under the supervision of Dr. Carlos Duarte. She spent 5 months at University of Michigan Medical School (Michigan, USA) to develop complementary studies for her PhD. Margarida got the PhD degree in Cell Biology in 2007. Her PhD research work resulted in two first author publications in expertise reviews (JBC, 282:12619 and Mol and Cell Neurosci, 35:208), a review publication as a second author (Brit J Pharcol, 153: Suppl1:S310) and was co-author of a chapter in the Handbook of Neurochemistry and Molecular Neurobiology. In 2007 she was granted with a FCT Pos-Doc Fellowship to develop her pos-doctoral research, studying "The ubiquitin proteasome system under excitotoxic conditions" at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology in collaboration with the Center of Ophthalmology, IBILI, Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra. This research project resulted several publications, namely the first author paper published in BBA-Mol Basis Disease, 1832: 263 and two important reviews in the field (Prog Neurob, 112: 50 and Neurochem Res, 41:156). In 2008, from February 1st to July 31st, Margarida was recruited by the University of Coimbra as an Invited Assistant Professor, full-time and exclusivity, to lecture in the Department of Life Sciences in the area of Molecular and Cellular Biology. From February 7th of 2011 to August 31st of 2013 she lectured again as an Invited Assistant Professor, full-time and exclusivity, at the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Coimbra in the areas of Genetics, Molecular and Cellular Biology. Her performance as a Professor was evaluated as Very Good. In 2013 she assumed her current position at CNC, as pos-doctoral researcher under the project “Aging, Stress and Chronic Diseases: From Mechanisms to Therapeutics”, supported by QREN - Mais Centro: Programa Operacional Regional do Centro, and RD Units Strategic Plan. Her research is focused on cellular dysfunctions and therapeutics and on the development of bioimaging methodologies. Margarida has collaborated in several research projects, improving the research studies with bioimaging methodologies. Moreover, Margarida has collaborated in the training of postgraduate students and has organized several advanced courses on microscopy and image analysis.
