Nélio Gonçalves is currently conducting post-doctoral research in Basic Medicine applied to Brain Development. The goal is to tackle key stages of the early CNS development by molecular, immune and pharmacological tools ensuring the comprehension and therapeutic modulation of abnormal brain circuitries resulting in neurodevelopmental disorders showing multiple intellectual disabilities, and with unmet medical needs. His previous research activities were devoted to Oncology tackling the TME by NP-based DDS (Nano Today 2021, 37:101095; IF 16.9) and NK cells' gene-editing against breast and lung cancers; and to Neurology mostly focused on the modulation of the adenosinergic and quality control systems in multiple disorders of the CNS aiming to prevent or alleviate disease progression by either administering drugs (Ann Neurol 2013, 73:655; 2017, 81:407; IF 11.2) or through viral-mediated delivery of classical (Brain 2012, 135:2428; IF:10.9; Neuropsychopharmacol 2016, 41:2862; IF:6.4; Nat Comm 2016, 7:11915; IF:11.5; Hum Mol Genet 2018, 27:3528; IF:7.7) and emerging light-inducible (optogenetic) nucleic acids (Mol Psychiatry 2015, 20:1339; IF:15.2) in diverse genetically modified animal models of disease. Throughout this period, Nélio has had management responsibilities over 5 animal colonies. Nélio has a h-index of 10, resulting from 18 co-authored publications in high impact peer-reviewed journals (all in Q1 and IF>4.0) on both basic and translational science, cited over 618 times (Web of Science source); and 10 publications in Conference Proceedings. He has also authored/co-authored 103 communications in national and international scientific meetings (51 oral communications and 52 poster presentations), involving 10+ collaborations and 100+ collaborators. Together, his work was distinguished by the National Ataxia Foundation, US, best lecture and Portuguese Soc of Neurosciences (best papers, 2). Was also awarded with Best National Talent under 35 years old in the Category of Science at PrémiosNovos2014, by 'Cego, Surdo e Mudo' productions. Additionally, he also actively participated in 25 national and international R&D projects funded by FCT, Santa Casa da Misericórdia (PT), DARPA, NARSAD, NAF, Alzheimer's Assoc. (USA), and by FEDER - QREN (EU), and is the recipient of up to 8 research fellowships and 1 research contract. Within this period, Nélio has lectured in postgraduate PhD (PDBEB-CNC, and Health Sciences, UC) and Master courses (FPharmacy, UC), co-supervise 5 under-graduated' and 5 Master' students, provide scientific and technical guidance for up to 14 PhD students, 6 MSc researchers and 2 lab technicians. He has also regularly participated in the Brain Awareness and Science and Technology weeks, and in the Open Day Lab (2014-2020), thus actively promoting scientific practices and culture. Culture wise, Nélio has coordinated and instructed in 2 Music Schools and prepared 6 Music Summer Intensive Courses, managing human resources and logistics. (last update 2021)
