Overview

My main research ambition is to contribute to the treatment of human disease. Throughout the years, my academic background and career choices have enabled me to conduct translational research, always with that goal in mind. During my BSc in Biochemistry and MSc in Cellular and Molecular Biology at the University of Coimbra, I was trained to think about scientific problems from a molecular to an organismal level. During my MSc work, I worked on the targeted delivery of nucleic acids to sensitise cancer cells to chemotherapy. During my PhD at the University of Cambridge (UK), I explored how metabolic shifts modulate and are affected by immune cell activation and function. As a visiting researcher at the Karolinska Institutet (Sweden), I focused on modulating cellular metabolism with gene editing to improve immunotherapeutic strategies for cancer. Currently, as a member of Filipe Pereira’s lab at CIBB, I intend to innovate their recentky developed dendritic cell reprogramming immunotherapy combining my background in (1) gene editing, (2) cellular metabolism, and (3) cancer immunology.
