Neuroscience & Disease

Current research in the Neuroscience and Disease area investigates brain function, dysfunction and therapies for brain diseases.

Overview

The Neuroscience and Disease research area at CNC-UC investigates the molecular, cellular and neuronal circuit mechanisms that regulate brain development and function. Its scope ranges from synaptic communication and plasticity, which underlie learning and memory, to the vascular regulation of neuronal activity, neurometabolic processes, and the mechanisms underlying behaviour and emotional regulation. Research encompasses the study of neurodevelopmental, neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders, including autism spectrum disorders, depression, schizophrenia, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and polyglutamine expansion disorders, namely Huntington’s disease.

Experimental work relies on cellular and animal models, including established disease models and those developed in-house, human neurons derived from induced pluripotent stem cells, and brain organoids, as well as human samples. This research integrates knowledge and methodologies from several disciplines, including molecular and cell biology, biochemistry, genetics, omics, electrophysiology, advanced microscopy, neuroimaging and behavioural analysis. The overarching goal is to advance our understanding of the mechanisms underlying brain dysfunction, identify biomarkers and novel therapeutic targets, and contribute to the development of strategies for disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

Main Goals

  • To understand the mechanisms underlying brain development and function, including synaptic plasticity, memory formation and the neuronal circuits involved in regulating specific behaviours;
  • To elucidate the molecular, cellular and circuit-level mechanisms underlying neurodevelopmental, neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders, including interactions between the nervous, immune, vascular and metabolic systems, with a view to identifying biomarkers and novel therapeutic targets;
  • To develop innovative strategies for disease prevention, diagnosis and therapeutic intervention, helping to mitigate or modify the progression of brain disorders and promote the translation of scientific knowledge into clinical practice.

Equity and Inclusion in Neuroscience Research

CNC-UC, a member of CiBB, endorses the ALBA Declaration on Equity and Inclusion. ALBA is a network of neuroscientists dedicated to promoting inclusive and equitable scientific communities. The ALBA Declaration proposes concrete actions that individuals and organisations can implement to promote equity and inclusion within the scientific community.
