Aim

The goal of the PDBEB Advanced Courses in Neuroscience is to provide an integrated view into both the physiological processes of neuronal synapses and circuits, and their dysfunction in neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases. In tandem with theoretical courses taught by international experts in the field, these advanced courses will include multiple intensive practical workshops. Students will attend theoretical and methodological lectures during the morning, and spend the afternoon performing hands-on projects in groups of 2-3 students.

In module 2 on Neuronal Circuits and Behavior, the following topics will be addressed:

- Synaptic transmission in the hippocampal circuit
- Whole-cell recordings
- Optogenetics
- In vivo recordings
- Cerebellar circuits
- Thalamic circuits
- Cortical circuits
- Behavioral analysis
- Neurodevelopmental disorders

Experimental projects include:

P2.1. Growth and analysis of human brain organoids (Ana Maria Cardoso & Mariana Martins).
P2.2. Electrophysiological analysis of cortical circuitry in adult mice (Mariana Laranjo & Jéssica Costa).
P2.3. Studying rodent behavior: from acquisition to analysis (Pedro Ferreira e Tiago Reis)
P2.4. Isolation and analysis of microglia from the mouse brain (Joana Guedes & Ana Luísa Cardoso).
P2.5. 3D-Explant models to study tangential migration (Ricardo Rodrigues & Joana M. Marques).
